Computing and Computer Programming for Geospatial Research and Applications

Downloads: 296 Avg Rating: 5.00 By: Prof Sunday ADEFIOYE in 2012.
In this era of rapid advancement in global geospatial technology, many developing countries are far behind in the application of computing and computer programming for geospatial researches. In order to keep pace with geospatial technology development in the world, it is necessary to examine the place of computing and indigenous software development for geospatial researches and applications, particularly in Nigeria. The study therefore aims at assessing GeoPoints 1.1’s functional design and applications, and examines the importance of indigenous applications development for geospatial researches and applications in Nigeria. GeoPoints was developed by Adefioye S. A. using Visual Basic 6.0 programming language and applied in the analysis of spatial pattern of wetland areas in Ile Ife. Database for wetland sites in Ile-Ife was created using the GeoPoints data editor. The database was imported into ArcMap 9.3 as a layer to create a map showing the wetland areas in Ile Ife. The layer was manipulated in ArcMap using the graphical user interface (GUI) of GeoPoints. Coordinates were also transformed from decimal degrees and degree minute seconds to the universal transverse Mercator (UTM) system in selected geographic datum and vice versa using the GeoPoints coordinates conversion feature. GeoPoints was observed to be useful to researchers and professionals in geoinformation sciences. Recommendations are made to ensure a sustainable applications development for Geospatial researches in Nigeria.
